In 2022, Google announced legacy free editions were no longer permitted for commercial use. The enforcement has stepped up this year. Notices are going out. Either pay for every user on a paid Google Workspace subscription, or watch the account get suspended.
For businesses with 10+ users, this often means tripling or quadrupling email costs overnight, often for users who only need basic email.
There is a third option: hybrid setup. Users who genuinely need Workspace features stay on paid Workspace. Other users migrate to lower-cost email on the same domain. Same data, less cost.
